The Control Board Foundation of the Protected Designation of Origin La Mancha Saffron generic goal is the social and economic promotion of Castilla La Mancha by means of the promotion of the saffron production, being its specific goal the prestige of the saffron produced under the protected designation of origin La Mancha Saffron.

The Foundation’s purpose is the representation, protection, guarantee, research, development and promotion of the saffron under the protected designation of origin La Mancha Saffron. The Foundation’s functions are:

  1. Looking out for the prestige and promotion of the Protected Designation of Origin La Mancha Saffron, and reporting, if applicable, before the competent authority any inappropriate usage of the PDO against the current legislation.

  2. Investigating the production and commercialization systems of this spice, spreading the know-how and implementation. Assisting both the operators who request it and the Government.

  3. Reviewing, drafting and suggesting the Product specification updates to the Government.

  4. Providing information among the consumers about the unique physicochemical, sensory, nutritional and healthy features of La Mancha Saffron. The Foundation will promote the knowledge on the history, the cultural and anthropological binding of this spice with its production zone.

  5. Carrying out promotional activities.

  6. Preparing the statistics regarding the production, manufacturing and commercialization, as well as any other information that may be requested, and reporting them to the appropriate organisation within the Government for spreading purposes.

  7. Collaborating with the Government by managing the Registry which contains information regarding the means and facilities of the producers and packagers who want to be included in the saffron marketplace.

  8. Developing the financial management, including those fees approved by the Board of Trustees for the Foundation financing.

  9. Working together with the competent authority keeping the Official Public Registry updated, as well as with the Control Agency which verifies the binding specifications approved by the Government.

 



  
 
 
  • 1995
    The Order of 20 February 1995, DOCM of 19 May 1995, provisionally acknowledges the designation of origin La Mancha Saffron, authorises the competent administration to designate the members of the provisional Control Board and sets the conditions for the drafting of the Regulation for the Designation of Origin.
  • 1998
    On the 5th of October 1998, the Bylaws of the Control Board Foundation of the Protected Designation of Origin La Mancha Saffron were executed as a deed. On the 22nd of October, the Foundation is registered in the Registry of Foundations of the Castilla La Mancha Government.
  • 1999
    The Order of 11 February 1999, DOCM no. 10 of 19 February 1999 recognises the Designation of Origin La Mancha Saffron and the Product Specification is published. Besides, this Order established that the Control Board Foundation of the Protected Designation of Origin La Mancha Saffron will be the responsible entity, as a control agency, for the verification of the compliance of the Product Specification. The Foundation will carry out this role until November 2011.
  • 2000
    The Order of 28 July 1999 of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, BOE no. 190 of 10 August 1999, modifies the Standards of Quality of Foreign Trade of Saffron, to avoid the usage of the same word to refer to the highest quality, type Mancha, with the name of the Designation of Origin.

    The Official Journal of the European Communities C17 of 22 June 2000 published the application for registration of the PDO La Mancha Saffron in the Registry of Protected Designations of Origin and Protected Geographical Indications, according to the article 6.2 of the Regulation (EEC) no. 2081/92.
